Term introduced by Duboscq, Léger, & Tuzet, Arch. Zool. Exp. Gen. 86: 29-144, 1948. In this paper the rank is indefinite but co-ordinate with Ascomycetes and Laboulbeniomycetes. In Manier (1955) the term is used in an unspecified rank 'embranchement', which is above a class. Two classes are then introduced: Protrichomyceta and Eutrichomyceta (p. 396) without a diagnosis. Manier (Annls Sci. nat., Bot., ser. 12, 9(1): 93-108, 1968) apparently validates the class name
